I love sleep. I take it very seriously. In fact, I might be a little obsessed with it.
But here’s the thing—I wasn’t always like this.
I used to struggle with sleep a lot when I was younger. I could never fall asleep early, and when I finally did, I’d wake up constantly.
I felt exhausted, but I didn’t know why.
👉 Turns out, it wasn’t just bad luck or genetics.
My environment was working against me.
When I started learning about Building Biology, circadian health, and sleep science, I realised that my bed —the very thing that was supposed to recharge me—was actually sabotaging me.
1. Is Your Bed Frame Harming You?
Let’s start with the foundation of your bed.
If you’re sleeping on a metal bed frame, it could be acting as an antenna for EMFs (electromagnetic fields) from Wi-Fi routers, electrical wiring, and devices in your home.
Metal conducts these fields, and when you’re lying on it for hours every night, it can disrupt your body’s melatonin production, which is crucial for deep, restful sleep.
We really don’t want our bed working against us like this.
✅ What’s Better?
Swap that metal bed for a wooden one!
A wooden bed frame doesn’t conduct EMFs. Plus, a handcrafted timber bed isn’t just healthier—it looks incredible too.
Choose untreated, solid wood to avoid synthetic chemicals and create your truly beautiful and functional sleep sanctuary.
2. Is Your Mattress Poisoning You?
Your mattress might look inviting, but many conventional mattresses are loaded with hidden hazards like:
Flame Retardants: Linked to hormone disruption and developmental issues.
VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds): Off-gassing chemicals that can cause headaches, respiratory problems, and even long-term health issues.
Formaldehyde: Found in adhesives and foams, which can irritate your skin and lungs.
Metal Coils – Just like metal bed frames, these can act as antennas for EMFs, amplifying exposure while you sleep.
You spend a third of your life in bed—why not make it the healthiest, most comfortable place possible?
✅ What’s Better?
I made the switch to a natural mattress and let me tell you, it was a game changer.
Choose mattresses made from natural materials that support your well-being:
• Organic Latex: Naturally resistant to mould and dust mites.
• Organic Wool: Naturally flame-resistant without the need for chemicals and excellent for temperature regulation.
Certifications to Look For:
• GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard).
• GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard).
• Oeko-Tex Standard 100.
Because let’s be real—I’d rather sleep on something designed for my well-being than a chemical soup of toxins.
Your Bed Linens: The Toxic Fabrics that Touch Your Skin
Your skin’s your largest organ, it’s in contact with your sheets and pillowcases for hours each night.
Synthetic bed linens made from petrochemical-based materials can irritate sensitive skin, trap heat, and even release microplastics.
✅ What’s Better?
Opt for natural, breathable fabrics like:
• Organic Cotton: Soft, hypoallergenic, and free from harmful dyes.
• Linen: Naturally temperature-regulating and antimicrobial.
• Bamboo: Moisture-wicking and gentle on the skin.
These materials not only feel better but also help regulate body temperature, improving the quality of your sleep.
And yes, my dog fully appreciates these upgrades too.
If we stay up too late, or if the blue light from the TV is left on too long, he’ll huff, puff, and sigh dramatically until we turn everything off.
He takes sleep hygiene as seriously as I do!
Sleep hygiene is vital—sleep isn’t just about rest, it’s about recovery.
Your Bed Should Be Your Safe Haven
Your bed should be the place where you feel safe, comfortable, and fully recharged.
Swap that metal frame for wood.
Ditch the chemical-laden mattress for natural wool, cotton, or latex.
Treat yourself to natural linen or cotton sheets.
Replace blue lights with red lights.
Get an air purifier.
There’s nothing like waking up cool, refreshed, and knowing your sleep space is as clean as it feels—even with my dog (a tiny furnace) snuggled up next to me.
Sweet dreams start with smart swaps.
As always, I’m so grateful you’re here.
Creating a home that supports deep, restorative sleep doesn’t have to be overwhelming—it’s all about small, intentional swaps that add up to big changes.

What Is Your Space Saying to Your Brain?
I’ve always been fascinated by how our brains work—why certain things make us feel calm, inspired, or stressed.
